Biography

Indie Courtney was born in 1997 in Sacramento, CA.Their interest in visual art started in film and video when they attended a summer program for film at CalArts where they received the Herb Alpert Emerging Young Artist award.Their film work has been screened at a variety of festivals and venues including the Stuttgarter Festival for Expanded Media in Germany, SPLICE in Brooklyn NY, REDCAT in LA, and others. Their interest in photography started at Bennington College in Vermont. During this time they collaborated with composer Eve Beglarian. After moving back to Sacramento they completed a variety of projects including two self published photo books and zines, and a self produced group exhibition titled "I think I've Been Here Before". Their work has been shown at the REEF, Oakland Photo Workshop, R.W. & Joyce Witt Gallery, Brea Gallery, and Glasgow Gallery of Photography. Their solo shows, 'Of the Machine', and 'The Light Was Singing Too' were shown at California Institute of the Arts. Their work focuses around queer identity and activism, through self portraits, experimental film, collage, and black and white landscape. They are also a musician and play piano, guitar and flute for over twenty years. They played synth for the Bay area latin new wave band, Los Sindes. They graduated from California Institute of the Arts with a BFA in photo and media in 2025.
